I went online and checked the prices through Canada (Bestpricerx, Canadarx) Bestpricerx costs me $42.99 for 90 day supply. I have to have name brand only as well and when I went on Medicare the cost through the drug plans was way to expensive! Before Medicare I was only paying $50 for 90 day supply but now would cost me over $200. I have read up on the alternative medications the insurance company is willing to cover but due to my high blood pressure diagnosis after my RAI treatment, I am not willing to put myself at risk of the heart side effects listed for those medications, and because of the extensive list of medications that I currently take. Even though I have already taken the generic in the past and it did not work and the endocrinologist switched me to name brand.Ĭurrently I take Synthroid - 200 mcg 4 days a week and on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays I take 400 mcg. I spoke to my insurance company who said I could file a claim and submit appeals with prior authorizations and letters from my doctor stating that brand name Synthroid is necessary and that I was diagnosed with papillary thyroid carcinoma in 03/2017 and had a total thyroidectomy and that then I was diagnosed with recurrent metastatic papillary thyroid carcinoma in 11/2020 and had to have a right and central complete neck dissection and RAI treatment in 01/2021 and that I have suffered from severe hypothyroidism and hypocalcemia and then was diagnosed with high blood pressure and other issues after the last surgery and RAI treatment - but none of that will matter and my insurance will not cover my name brand Synthroid. They said they cover the generic, and three other alternatives now - Levoxyl, Unithroid, and Euthyrox. I received a phone call from the pharmacy two weeks ago saying that they could not process my prescription for Synthroid because my insurance was no longer covering the name brand.
